Our Mission

The South Asian Bar Association of British Columbia (SABABC) is dedicated to, among other things, supporting the local South Asian community, promoting the professional development of South Asian lawyers, paralegals and law students, and representing the interests of South Asians locally, nationally and internationally.

SABABC is committed to promoting the professional development of the South Asian legal community through networking, advocacy and mentoring. SABABC hosts panels, continuing legal education courses, and workshops on career development, social justice issues, and current events.

SABABC aims to remove any barriers South Asian students may face in pursuing a career in the legal profession and those faced by the South Asian community in accessing justice and educational programs in the community.

We invite all lawyers, paralegals, law students and judges to please join SABABC in its commitment to achieving these goals.

Message From The President

“Welcome to SABABC’s newly revamped website.  We are pleased to provide our members with a current, easy to navigate and more informative place to stay connected with SABABC and each other.
We strongly  encourage you to get involved with SABABC and help develop your legal career while giving back to the community and paying it forward for the benefit of those following you.  Having been involved with SABABC from the outset, I can attest to the many opportunities which will present themselves to you as a member of SABABC, from business and professional development to great friendships and to personal satisfaction of having made a significant contribution to the South Asian, legal and at large communities.
In 2004, a small group of diverse lawyers of South Asian descent met, some for the first time, and discussed the viability of forming the first Canadian chapter of what is now known as SABA North America.  The founding President of that organization, Navneet Chugh, led the discussion describing the challenges we as South Asian lawyers in North America faced and the many benefits of joining SABA North America and establishing the first chapter of the organization outside of the USA.  Many meetings later, SABABC was incorporated as a BC society and the BC chapter of SABA North America.  Now over 10 years later, SABABC continues to be active and relevant to lawyers and law students.
Since its formation, SABABC has been dedicated to the advancement and development of lawyers and law students, particularly of South Asian descent. Our members cover the full spectrum of practice, from national and international firms, small and medium sized local firms, solo practice, government, in-house counsel, non-profits, the judiciary, academia and law students.  This diversity of practice provides for a unique and rich exchange of ideas and experiences.
Notwithstanding such diversity, what ties all of our members together is the desire to promote and develop lawyers and law students of South Asian descent.  SABABC’s activities include professional development, educating the community about relevant legal issues, expanding and enhancing business and professional opportunities, mentorship and the fostering of goodwill, fellowship and exchange of ideas and information amongst the South Asian members of the Bar.  We have accomplished these goals through continuing education events, the annual Fall Conference, hosting the SABA North America Annual Convention in 2009, pro bono clinics, community events, networking and social events, Galas, the annual awarding of scholarships and bursaries to law students, establishing relationships with law school student clubs, and working closely with the Law Society of BC and the Canadian Bar Association of BC.
Members of SABABC are provided the opportunity to learn from colleagues who have gone through similar experiences in the past, obtain career and legal advice and counsel from colleagues with a wide variety of skills and experiences, interact with others who understand the cultural challenges and experiences South Asians may face, expand their network of friends, mentors and advocates, and become part of a unique community.
Come and join us at SABABC and take advantage of what it has to offer you while also expressing your voice and ideas, building your network, giving back and promoting the success of South Asian members of the Bar.  We look forward to meeting and working with you for the betterment of all.”
