SABA Congratulates Her Ladyship, Palbinder Kaur Shergill QC

Dear SABABC Members and Friends,

It is with great pleasure that SABABC congratulates Madame Justice Shergill on her appointment to the Supreme Court of British Columbia.

Palbinder Kaur Shergill, Q.C., of Shergill & Company, replaces Madam Justice E.A. Arnold-Bailey, who retired effective May 31, 2017.

Her Ladyship has a long and distinguished career, acting in several landmark cases before the Supreme Court of Canada, including Syndicat Northcrest v. Amselem, dealing with freedom of religion and Multani v. Commission Scolaire, dealing with right of Sikh students to wear the kirpan in schools. Justice Shergill regularly spoke on human rights issues both nationally and internationally. In addition to her volunteer work, she was a Governor for the Trial Lawyers Association of BC and served as a Director on the Fraser Health Authority Board from 2002 to 2008. She was also a past Chair of the National Administrative Law Section of the Canadian Bar Association.

Diversity on the bench has been a passionate topic for SABABC. Justice Shergill’s appointment is a landmark not only for the South Asian community, but for all those who seek a more just British Columbia. This is an amazing time to be a lawyer in British Columbia and certainly feels like one of those historical moments we should all celebrate.
