SABABC Scholarships and Bursaries Program

SABABC is pleased to invite applications for financial awards from law students who are currently enrolled in first or second year in the Faculty of Law at the University of British Columbia, the University of Victoria or Thompson Rivers University.  The financial awards will be issued from an aggregate of up to $2,000.  SABABC will determine individual award amounts based on merit and the quality of applications received, with individual awards ranging from $500 to $2,000.

Scholarships and Bursaries

The financial awards have two components: a scholarship component and a bursary component.  Scholarship applicants must submit an original short essay written on a topic concerning South Asians and the law.  Bursary applicants must provide information documenting their financial need.  Applicants may apply for both the scholarship and bursary.

Criteria

  • community involvement;
  • academic merit;
  • for scholarship applicants, the quality of an original short essay; and
  • for bursary applicants, financial need.

How to Apply

Please fill out the attached application form.  All applicants must complete Part A.  Scholarship applicants must complete Part B.  Bursary applicants must complete Part C.

Completed applications, together with all of the required materials (including academic transcripts), must be submitted via email to SABABC, c/o Hardeep Gill at hgill@fasken.com.  Incomplete or incorrect applications will not be considered.

The deadline for receipt of completed applications is March 30, 2018.

SABABC expects to notify award recipients by April 30, 2018.  SABABC reserves the right not to issue any financial awards.

Eligibility

The awards are open to all law students enrolled in first or second year in the Faculty of Law at the University of British Columbia, the University of Victoria or Thompson Rivers University at the time of the deadline for applications. Preference will be given to those with proven South Asian ancestry (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) or demonstrated interest in South Asia or the diaspora.

Selection Process

A committee appointed by SABABC will review the applications and submitted materials and evaluate them on a number of subjective and objective criteria. Applicants may be interviewed by phone or in person by a member of the selection committee.
